Black Los Angeles: Displacement in Utopia
Based on the mini documentary Los Angeles: Displacement in Utopia, Keith Rice (CSUN Tom & Ethel Bradley Center) discusses the role of racial restrictive covenants in systemically barring Black communities from the “American Dream” of home ownership. Rice connects this history to the current battle for housing equity in Los Angeles, highlighting how generations of Black Americans were robbed of generational wealth.

Thomas Philo, CSUDH Archivist will discuss his digital exhibition Perpetual and Binding Forever, which examines how developers of a small West Los Angeles subdivision were forced to become the weaponized arm of the government's racist attitudes. The development of Tract 11556 into the Cheviot Knolls subdivision is told through original documents of the CSUDH Gerth Archives Rancho San Pedro Collection.
